The Importance of Neurodivergent (ND) Voices
Representation in Literature
Let's be honest: disabled representation in literature is more than just a trendy buzzword—it’s a vital part of storytelling that bridges gaps between diverse lives and experiences. For far too long there hasn't been any neurodivergent representation in mainstream literature and the few books that have did not include neurodivergent contribution. This leads to works that inadvertently other our experiences to plain old ignorance, the literary world hasn’t always been open to welcoming neurodivergent narratives. Having more neurodivergent and disabled authors in the spotlight allows for richer stories that resonate on a personal level for many readers who rarely see themselves reflected on the page.
For a dyslexic, AuDHEer (Autisitc and ADHD) such as myself, or other NDs, seeing a character who navigates the world similarly can be like finding an unexpected friend in an often isolating universe. Books by neurodivergent authors can validate intersectional experiences, making readers say, "OMG, that's me!".
Here at MAKES SENSE TO ME we are all about nurturing those lightbulb moments, celebrating neurodivergent and disabled voices and making neurodiversity-affirming books readily available. Such representation can also enlighten those outside the community, fostering empathy, understanding, and much-needed discourse about the nuances of neurodivergent lives. In a world where differences are often stigmatised, books are a safe-place where every story and every mind, is welcome.

These traits are part of the characters' identities, adding relatability and depth without defining the whole story. This representation is meaningful for those who share these conditions and serves as a casual reminder to others, that diverse bodies, needs, and strengths are natural aspects of the human population. It causes chronic fatigue and heightened sensory sensitivity, affecting social and work life. Raising awareness and support is crucial.
We are delighted to see a book about this underrepresented topic written by Children's Well-being Practitioner, Autism Specialist and fellow AuDHDer Jodie Clarke. If you're navigating the often overwhelming world of autistic burnout, this guide offers a lifeline. Revitalising in Gloomy January
The Company of Owls
January often feels endless as winter deepens and daylight fades. The cold can confine us indoors, making it important for our mental health to stay connected with nature. For those dealing with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), even brief time outside can help. Despite gray skies, natural light boosts serotonin, which can lift our mood. Simple activities like walking in a park, enjoying your garden, or just observing a winter scene can offer comfort, like a warm hug from nature.
Polly Atkin's book, The Company of Owls, offers an introspective journey filled with wisdom. A poet and author with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Polly observes the local Tawny owls as they mate and care for their young, witnessing fluffy owlets take their first steps. Her honest reflections on solitude, companionship, and personal growth feel like a thoughtful chat with an old friend, perfect for a quiet night in. This book is a heartfelt tribute to the stunning natural beauty of Grasmere in Cumbria, inviting readers to connect with the world’s wonders.
